How to use the chess clock

  1. Pick a time control or set the minutes per player and the increment.
  2. Put your phone or tablet between the players and tap full screen. The top half flips so both players can read their time.
  3. Black taps their side to start White’s clock. After each move, tap your own side to stop your clock and start your opponent’s.
  4. Use the middle button to pause. When a clock reaches zero it turns red and buzzes.

The first number is minutes per player, the second is the increment: seconds added to your clock after each move you make. Increment prevents losing on time in a winning position.

Not just for chess

Any two-player game with turns works: checkers, Scrabble, board games or debate practice. Under 10 seconds the clock shows tenths so close finishes are clear.

Questions and answers

How does increment work?

After you tap to end your turn, the increment is added to your time. With 3+2, each move you complete adds 2 seconds.

Who presses first?

Black starts White’s clock, so White moves first with their time running.

Can I pause the game?

Yes. Press the middle button to pause both clocks and again to resume.
